Fall season is here! What a great time of the year to enjoy the changing seasons, beautiful colors, and seasonal foods. There are several vocabulary and phrases important for this time of year that you should learn: apple picking, leaf raking, autumnal equinox, and fall foliage. Let me explain them in a little more detail and how to avoid common Japanese mistakes.
秋になりました！季節の変わり目や綺麗な色の変化、季節の食べ物を楽しめる絶好な時期です。この時期に知っておきたい大切な語彙やフレーズがあります：apple picking（リンゴ狩り）、 leaf raking（枯葉集め）、 autumnal equinox（秋分）、そして fall foliage（紅葉）これらのことをもう少し詳しく説明し、よくする失敗を回避する方法を教えましょう。
Apple-picking: Many, many Japanese English speakers want to say, “I picked up apples,” for ‘ringo-gari.’ Actually, that means, ‘I picked up the apples from the ground.’ The correct sentence is “I went apple-picking.” You can use that phrase for anything: blueberries, asparagus, chestnuts (even though you do pick up chestnuts from the ground), etc.
リンゴ狩り：英語を話すたくさんの日本人が、「リンゴ狩り」の事を“I picked up apples,”を言いたがります。実はこれ、「地面のリンゴを拾った」という意味なんです。正しい文章は “I went apple-picking.” （私はリンゴ狩りに行きました）です。このフレーズは何にでも使えます：ブルーベリー、アスパラガス、栗（たとえ地面から栗を拾っても）など。
Raking: This is something that is not often done in Japan as there are not so many trees around houses in Japan. If you live in a house in America, you probably will have to deal with leaf raking. “I raked the leaves around my house today,” is a good sentence. You can also say, “My children enjoyed jumping in the leaf piles!!”
枯葉集め：日本では、お家の周りにたくさんの木がないので、あまりやったことがないと思います。アメリカで一軒家に住むなら、たぶん枯葉集めと上手く付き合っていかないといけないでしょう。“I raked the leaves around my house today,”（今日、家の周りの枯葉集めをしました）。また、“My children enjoyed jumping in the leaf piles!!”（子供たちは枯葉の山にジャンプするのを楽しんでたわ）も言えます。
Autumnal Equinox: This is what we call the ‘first day of fall’ in America. The first day of spring is the Vernal Equinox. We take the middle of those dates to make ‘the first day of summer and ‘the first day of winter.’ Now you know how we make those dates!
秋分：アメリカでは‘first day of fall’（秋の初日）と言います。春の初日は春分です。それぞれの真ん中の日を‘the first day of summer’（夏の初日）と ‘the first day of winter.’（冬の初日）にしています。これでどうやって日にちを決めたのか分かりましたね！
Fall Foliage: You can say, “fall foliage” or “fall colors” to describe the beautiful leaf colors. Formally, you could say, “I like fall foliage viewing,” but more likely we would say, “I like the fall colors” or “I went for a drive to see the fall colors.” For online google searches, you can write in, “fall foliage/color viewing,” or “fall foliage/color tours.”
紅葉：綺麗な葉の色を説明するのに“fall foliage” や “fall colors”といいます。正式には“I like fall foliage viewing,”（紅葉を見るのが好きです）といいますが、“I like the fall colors” や “I went for a drive to see the fall colors.”と私たちはよく言います。グーグルで検索する場合は、“fall foliage/color viewing,” や “fall foliage/color tours.”と入力しましょう。
